FABRIK Photoforum
The FABRIK Photoforum is based on different creative activities,
which are offered to visitors since the beginning of the 70s.
Additionally to other working groups the concept of the FABRIK
"join in" implies also activities within the area
of photography such as courses and workshops which were accompanied
by sporadic exhibitions at the beginning of its foundation.
Now regular photo exhibitions take place. The aim of this
work is to motivate visitors to take a close look at the practical
and theoretical side of photography.
After the fire and the reconstruction of the FABRIK a separate
location the so-called multimedia room was used for exhibitions
which intensified the organisation of them. The concentration
on photo exhibitions was based on the fact that there were
just a few locations to exhibit photos in Hamburg.
Because of the varied programme of exhibitions where well-known
as well as young talented professionals are presented it has
been possible in a relative short time to establish the photo
forum as an institution. Meanwhile more than 280 exhibitions
of national- and international photographers have taken place.
The main emphasis of the exhibition was and is still put on
the conveyance of all various manifestations of photography.
Our main interest is based on working groups of popular photo
journalists, photo designers as well as photographers who
use this medium as an artistic method of expression. Moreover,
thematic orientated exhibitions of work groups are organised.
The increasing intensity in all sections of the photo forum
lead to a movement of the single sections to other locations
because of organisational matters, for instance the photo
laboratory moved to the neighbourhood and since 1991 the expositions
take place at the Grauwert gallery (district Eimsbüttel).
Additionally to continuous exhibitions at the Grauwert gallery
the photo forum organised larger exhibitions for other institutions
as e.g. at the Kunsthaus Hamburg, at the international photo
festival in Herten, at the international photo festival in
Bratislava, for the municipal gallery in Berlin, for the Hamburg-Dresden
festival, etc. The photo forum also supports an exchange of
artistic objects within the German photo scene.
The cooperation of the FABRIK with the Gauwert gallery came
to an end in May 1996. Accordingly the photo forum looked
intensively for a new location and a welcome alternative was
offered by the museum Altona. As a consequence, the FABRIK
as well as the museum Altona have favourable synergies and
enlarge the cultural life of Hamurg.
Each year the FABRIK photo forum presents ca. 4-5 smaller
exhibitions and some larger exhibitions, for instance the
prèmiere of an extensive retrospective (about 250 exhibits)
with pictures of Clemens Kalischer, which are presented afterwards
at different places in Europe an in the USA.
